Quick answer: For everyday backyard shade, a breathable 200 GSM sail is enough. If you also want cover from rain, choose a 220 GSM waterproof sail. For large spans, pools, driveways or windy sites, step up to a 260 GSM sail with steel cable edges, such as Super Ring or Pro Ring.
When you shop for a shade sail you will see a number followed by "GSM", which stands for grams per square meter. It tells you how heavy the fabric is. Heavier fabric is usually stronger and blocks more sun, but weight is only part of the story. How the edges and corners are built, and what the fabric is made to do, matter just as much.
All ShadeMart sails are made in our La Puente, California workshop and come in standard and custom sizes. This guide explains how our four lines compare so you can pick the right one the first time.

What does GSM actually mean?
GSM is the weight of one square meter of fabric. A 260 GSM sail uses about 30% more material per square meter than a 200 GSM sail. More material usually means a denser knit, more UV blocked and better resistance to tearing. It also means a heavier sail that needs solid mounting points.
GSM does not tell you everything. A heavy fabric with weak corners will still fail at the corners first, because that is where the pulling force goes. That is why our heavy-duty sails pair 260 GSM fabric with a steel cable in every edge.
Standard 200 GSM: breathable everyday shade

Our Standard sail is a knitted HDPE fabric that blocks 95% of UV rays while letting air and light rain pass through. Because hot air escapes through the knit, the space underneath stays cooler than under a solid cover, and rain does not collect on top.
Choose Standard if: you want sun protection for a patio, deck, garden bed or play area and don't need rain cover. It is the most affordable line and the right choice for most backyards.
Waterproof 220 GSM: shade and rain cover

If you want to sit outside during a shower, choose Waterproof. The PU-coated fabric sheds rain and still blocks 95% of UV rays.
Install tip: a waterproof sail must slope. Mount one or two corners lower than the others so water runs off the low edge. A flat waterproof sail will collect water in the middle, which stretches the fabric and loads the hardware.
Super Ring 260 GSM: our strongest sail

Super Ring sails use 260 GSM virgin HDPE fabric with 98% UV protection. A stainless steel cable runs through the hem from corner to corner and locks between two 304 stainless steel plates at each corner ring. The pulling force is carried by the cable instead of the fabric, so the edges stay straight and tight and there is no grommet to tear out.
Choose Super Ring if: you are covering a large area, a pool or a driveway, or you live somewhere windy. It also carries our longest sail warranty, 5 years.
Pro Ring 260 GSM: built for commercial use

Pro Ring sails share the 260 GSM fabric and steel cable edges, with stainless Pro Ring corners designed for restaurants, schools, pool decks and other heavy-use spaces. They come in beige and gray and carry a 5-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions
Is a higher GSM shade sail always better?
Not always. Higher GSM means more material and usually more strength and UV protection, but it also means more weight on your mounting points. For a small patio, a 200 GSM sail is often the better value.
Can a breathable shade sail keep rain off?
No. Breathable HDPE sails let light rain pass through. If you need to stay dry, choose a waterproof sail and install it with a slope.
Do I need hardware?
Yes. You need a mounting fixture and a tensioning accessory at each corner. Our 304 stainless steel hardware kits include what you need for each corner and carry a lifetime warranty.
Which colors are available?
